How To Banish Blemishes

How To Banish Blemishes Banish post-holiday blemishes with these treatments and products

Overindulging and lack of exercise over the festive season can result in new year breakouts. Combat them with these treatment options.

The facial

The 30-minute HydraFacial, from $100, www.hydrafacial.com.au, combines cleansing, exfoliation and resurfacing with skin peels, extraction of blocked pores and an infusion of antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid.

You can also add on specific treatments. Expect some post-treatment redness, which should subside within an hour.

One facial should suffice for mild breakouts. For more acute problems, try six to eight.

The “permanent” option

A new treatment, sebaceous gland ablation, promises to permanently eliminate pimples. It is still in its infancy, though, so do your research if you are thinking about having it done.
It uses a fine probe to heat and destroy overactive sebaceous glands. There will be redness and swelling immediately after treatment, which usually subsides within 24 hours. Within three days, the spot forms a head, which is extracted during a follow-up facial.

During the next 14 days the skin is rough and bumpy and you need a peel to exfoliate the dead skin.

Clear Skincare Clinics has exclusive rights to the treatment and reports positive results with two to six treatments ($93 each when bought as a pack of three).

The light therapy

Omnilux, from $90 per treatment, www.spauniverse.com.au, is a light therapy treatment that directs infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to the skin. Various lights can be used, but a combination of red and blue delivers best results.

Blue targets excess sebum production, inflammation and bacteria growth. Red rejuvenates, firms and smooths skin.

Try six to eight treatments with a glycolic acid facial.

The skincare kit

Skin Clarity’s new daily three-step system (Foaming Cleanser, Clarity Gel and Repair Cream, $29.99 for three, www.skinclarity.com.au) targets blemishes with glycolic and salicylic acids. It is free of benzoyl peroxide, a possible skin irritant. Great for teenage skin.

The spot cream

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, $26.95, www.kitcosmetics.com.au, uses calamine and salicylic acid to clear blackheads, whiteheads and pimples almost overnight. Immerse a cotton bud in the lotion and dab on the spot.

The home device

The Sqoom, $895 plus gels, www.drserene.com, claims to clear congestion, exfoliate and rehydrate skin fast.

It is a handheld device that facilitates penetration of tailored skincare products via ionisation and ultrasound vibrations.
